Pedagogical book for teachers
2nd and 3rd Cycles of Basic Education
The Gaspar Frutuoso Foundation aims to bring knowledge to the community in which it operates.
For this reason, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Gaspar Frutuoso, it was considered important to produce and publish a pedagogical book on the life and work of the Azorean humanist, structured around his seminal work Saudades da Terra.
The manuscript, written between 1586 and 1590 and divided into six volumes, is the result of the author's observations and is a detailed description of the archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira and the Canaries, as well as multiple references to Cape Verde and other Atlantic regions.
It contains the most important repository of information on the geography, history, life, customs, genealogy, toponymy, fauna and flora of the Atlantic archipelagos at the beginning of the 17th century, establishing its author as a humanist character typical of the Renaissance: encyclopaedic, literary, an artist and musician, an observer of natural phenomena, worried with alchemical experiments and speculating correctly in the fields of geology, biology, mineralogy and petrography.
The educational book The World of Gaspar Frutuoso is aimed at teachers and students in the 2nd and 3rd cycles of basic education, with the aim of discovering the man - the humanist, the naturalist, the volcanologist - and the work Saudades da Terra is organised in three parts:
- The first presents information about the author, Gaspar Frutuoso, his career and his work, Saudades da Terra;
- The second provides 12 transdisciplinary activity proposals, i.e. that can be carried out in different disciplinary contexts. They are organised as follows: a guide with information for the teacher on the proposed activity; an activity, prepared to be printed out and made available individually to each student.
- The third and final part is a compilation of resources: to read, to explore and to visit; and a comparative chronology (Gaspar Frutuoso - Portugal - World).
We hope that this educational book will promote the knowledge, visibility and contribution of this important Renaissance author and his unique work, on the one hand, and emphasise the importance and richness of the natural and historical heritage of the Azores archipelago, on the other.
