The National Archaeological Museum, host of the exhibition "Memories. Territories. Identities" exhibition contacted Mapa das Ideias to develop a merchandising collection for the event. The final client was Loulé City Council, to which the merchandising would be transferred after the temporary exhibition ended, once part of the collection on display belongs to the Loulé Municipal Museum. The approvals and meetings took place with a large team from both the MNA and the Loulé Museum.
The collection on display was vast in terms of chronology (from 220 million-year-old fossils to 18th century ceramics), history (Islamic and Roman presence, etc.) and typology (sculpture, writing, ornaments, etc.).
From the 500 pieces on display, 20 pieces were selected that gave rise to 66 merchandising products, of which 29 were approved, due to various restrictions (economic issues, issues of pieces outside the collection, belonging to other organisations, etc).
Mapa das Ideias proposed a line-up of merchandising collections that respected and represented the major historical periods present, not by chronology, but by their thematic frameworks.
This organisation was chosen because the merchandising was intended to represent the total context of the exhibition rather than each individual piece, thus allowing for some creative freedom in crossing periods.
The catalogues's organisation has therefore been divided into the following topics:
- Carved objects
- Writing
- Ceramics
- Coins
- Mosaics
- Ornaments
The contact with Mapa was made after the exhibition had opened, and the approvals and supply of images took a long time. In the end, when the merchandising was delivered, the exhibition was only a month away, which made it impossible to assess its impact and profitability.
